Equipment Checklist for Commercial Diving Gear
Commercial divers are asked to work in a wide range of environments throughout their careers. From conducting maintenance procedures on oil rigs to conducting underwater surveys of ship hulls, they come across a variety of opportunities to put their experience, knowledge, and skills to good use.
Of course, every job requires specialized tools, gear, and equipment. However, there is specific equipment and gear that commercial divers are required to have on them every time they go underwater.
In this piece, we’re going to go over an equipment checklist for commercial diving gear. So, let’s get right into it, shall we?
Diving Suits That Commercial Divers Wear
Commercial divers typically wear the following types of suits:
· Wetsuit: Wetsuits offer great protection against steel, coral, and other elements that could otherwise penetrate the skin and cause injury. They’re skintight, meaning they only allow a very thin layer of water to enter between your body and the suit. As your body heat warms the layer of water, you’ll gain insulation. Depending on the wetsuit’s thickness, there are limits to the length of time you can work and the temperatures you can work in. Wetsuits are ideal for warm water environments in situations when you need to be more buoyant or flexible in the water.
· Drysuit: Drysuits keep divers’ bodies dry. They are used primarily in colder climates; they come with a neck seal and cuffs at the wrist to keep water from entering the suit. The neck seal connects to the helmet, and there’s a waterproof zipper in the back. Unlike wetsuits, drysuits are baggy.
Commercial Weight Belt and Safety Harness
Commercial weight belts are used to help divers control their buoyancy. They come in especially handy when they need to work at the bottom of the sea. They typically weigh about 10 kgs and are made of top-grade, heavy-duty lead that’s specifically designed to be durable in rough environments.
They also come equipped with an adjustable safety harness that provides an added level of protection if the diver becomes unconscious or is unable to make it to the surface on their own.
Diving Helmet
The diver’s helmet is their main breathing source that also comes equipped with a demand valve and an intercom system to communicate with the surface support team.
